Gina Updegraff

Gina has served in the Fire Service since 1993 when she was hired by the UC Davis Fire Department. She became an Engineer at UCD Fire in 2002.
She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of San Diego and a Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
Joe Newman

Hometown: Englewood, NJ
Joe began his career in the fire service in 2002, first as a Reserve Firefighter for the City of Napa and then in 2005 becoming a career firefighter with the UC Davis Fire Department. Joe was promoted to Engineer in 2011.
Prior to working in the fire service, Joe owned and operated a successful automotive detailing and window tinting business, in downtown Napa. A former fire chief, who was also a customer, told Joe that with his customer service experience and work ethic he would be a good fit for the fire service and he should consider becoming a firefighter. Joe made the transition and started his second career at the UC Davis Fire Department.
Currently Joe is assigned to Truck 34 on C Shift. Joe is also active in the UC Firefighter’s union, IAFF local 4437 and is the current president. He is also a member of the department’s Strategic Planning Team which is responsible for creating and implementing a plan for departmental accreditation.
Jonathan Poganski
Firefighter
Hometown: Des Moines, Iowa
Serving in the fire service since 1999, Firefighter Jonathan Poganski started his career as a fire explorer with the Newcastle Fire Protection District and worked through the ranks as a volunteer and part-time firefighter from 1999 to 2009. He also spent two years from 2003 to 2005 with Cal Fire as a resident firefighter. He joined the Placer County Interagency Hazmat Team as a volunteer in 2003 and still remains active within the agency. In 2005, Jonathan joined the UC Davis Fire Department as a firefighter and also finds time to be a volunteer firefighter with the Placer Hills Fire Protection District.
The fire service allows Jonathan to follow other passions and pursue other interests such as hazardous materials. He is able to work part-time as a firefighter during events for NASCAR, NHRA and the INDY racing league events for Speedway Motorsports International at Sonoma Raceway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In 2010, he became a member of the California FIRESCOPE Hazardous Materials Working Group.
Scott Hatcher

Scotts’ interest in the fire service started in high school while participating in a Firefighting ROP program. In 2000, he joined the Sacramento City Fire Department Reserves and became an Intern Fire Fighter with the Elk Grove CSD Fire Department. After completing his internship he began work with the Wilton Fire Department.
In 2005, Scott was hired with The UC Davis Fire Department. Currently, Scott proudly serves as a Firefighter and has programmatic responsibility over ladder maintenance and Rope rescue.
Braden Burrhus

Serving in the fire service since 2008, Firefighter Braden Burrhus started his career as an intern/volunteer firefighter with Nevada County Consolidated Fire District after graduating from the Sierra College Regional Fire Academy.
Beginning the summer of 2008, Braden was hired as a Seasonal Firefighter I with Cal Fire – NEU. He worked with Cal Fire for two consecutive fire seasons until 2010 when he chose to pursue a Paramedic license.
Braden attended Sierra College where he earned an Associate of Science degree in Fire Technology as well as an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts. Braden follows in the footsteps of three generations of firefighters in his family that date back to 1937. In June of 2011, he was chosen to be a proud member of the UC Davis Fire Department as a full-time firefighter.
