The UC Davis Fire Department is now hiring career firefighters.

Below is a list of FAQs:

When are applications open?

  • April 11, 2018 - May 16, 2018 (applications close at midnight pst on May 16)

Is there a minimum age to apply?

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.

Are there any prerequisites?

  • You must have a current CPAT physical fitness card that has been issued SINCE April 11, 2017 (cards issued before that date will not be recognized) You MUST bring the valid card to the written test in order to be admitted into the room.

How can I get a CPAT card?

  • If you live in the Sacramento region you should visit www.fctconline.org/cpat/ as soon as possible to schedule a test.

Do I need to have EMT or Firefighter 1 Certification?

  • While those certifications are preferred, they are not required to apply. We want good people, who are committed to our department and community - if you are a fit we will give you everything you need to be successful.

When is the written test?

  • Saturday, May 26th. (time and location will be sent to you with your application acceptance confirmation.)

If I pass the written test will there be interviews?

  • Yes, individuals who score in the top tier of the written test will be invited to panel interviews on Wednesday, May 30th. Those whole are recommended to move forward in the process will have a final interview with the Fire Chief on Friday, June 1st.

Will I have to pass a background and drug test?

  • Yes, you will also have to complete a pre-employment physical, cardiac stress test, and respiratory fit test prior to getting a final job offer.

How many firefighters will UCDFD hire from this process?

  • 3 firefighters will be hired from this recruitment.

When do you plan to start the new firefighters?

  • Right now the tentative start date has been set for July 9, 2018.

Will I have to go to a firefighter academy?

  • Yes, we send all new hires to the Sacramento Fire Department 28 week academy. The only exception is for those who have already been through that academy since 2014. There are no other exceptions regardless of experience or training.

If I cannot make one of the dates outlined in the process can I come at another time or will accommodations be made to fit my schedule?

  • No, you will be one of the hundreds who apply for this opportunity. Not only is it not possible administratively, but part of the selection process is identifying potential employees who are committed to going above and beyond to get the job they want with UCDFD.

Can I do a station visit or ride-along during the process?

  • Station visits and ride-alongs will only be allowed for those who make are invited to panel interviews. Instructions will be provided in those invitations on how to schedule.
