Students Provided Unique Experience Through New Partnership with Sac Metro Fire

For nearly three years the UC Davis Fire Department (UCDFD) has partnered with Los Rios Community Colleges to provide Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification training to the UC Davis Campus and surrounding community.

Doing so has provided a rare opportunity for UCD students, preparing for careers in many medical fields, to enhance their education and gain real-world experience. Last week the opportunity for hands-on experience of program graduates took a huge step forward.

UCDFD Crews Train for Challenging Rescues

This week UC Davis Fire Department firefighters took the opportunity to further develop their technical rescue skills during a training evolution at Clark Pacific in Woodland, CA.

A simulated victim trapped beneath large slabs of concrete, weighing approximately 1500lbs each, provided ample opportunity for fire crews to utilize multiple tools from Truck 34. Tools such as rescue jacks (struts), airbags, cribbing, a cable come along and pry bars were used in different configurations to rescue the simulated victim.

Campus Researchers and Responders Train for Rescues in Labs

Being one of the nation’s top-tier research institutions means that some of the world’s most important science is being explored and developed in our labs and facilities every day.  The scope and complexity of the research mission at UC Davis requires that UCDFD personnel have the knowledge and skills to be ready for just about anything.

This week UCDFD responders along with our partners from EH&S, Safety Services, and campus researchers collaborated to practice a simulated rescue of a downed person in a lab.
